news article on time crystal

Normal crystals, likes diamond, are an atomic lattice that repeats in space, but physicists recently suggested making materials that repeat in time. Last year, reseachers sketched out the phases surrounding a time crystal and what to measure in order to confirm that this new material is actually a stable phase of matter. This stimulated two teams to build a time crystal, the first examples of a non-equilibrium form of matter. -sciencedaily article on time crystals

It needs further confirmation, but time crystals might indeed be possible.   Some recent articles had suggested they might be impossible, but this new research suggests they may actually be possible.   Further information in favor or against is needed.

news aspartame| nutrition | 2016

Aspartame may prevent, not promote, weight loss by blocking intestinal enzyme's activity

-news source link

Comment:

It seems aspartame might lead to greater weight gain upon high fat consumption, glucose intolerance and other issues.   Whether sucralose, has   similar issues remains to be seen, but for now it seems that sucralose would be a better no calorie sweetener.

PS I think I heard somewhere that aspartame interferes with some sirtuins function, if that is so, it'd interfere with things like resveratrol and pterostilbene.

News on iron

Iron deficiency may increase stroke risk by making the blood more sticky, scientists have discovered. Every year, 15 million people worldwide suffer a stroke. Nearly six million die and another five million are left permanently disabled. The most common type, ischaemic stroke, occurs because the blood supply to the brain is interrupted by small clots. In the last few years, several studies have shown that iron deficiency, which affects around two billion people worldwide, may be a risk factor for ischaemic stroke in adults and in children.-link

Too much iron is bad, and too little is bad too.  Biological enhancements will hopefully one day allow the body to store a large reserve safely, and eliminate easily excess. For now it's best to check iron levels and ensure excess and deficiency is avoided, as the present bodies are fragile.

Domoic acid accumulates in seafood and is toxic to the brain. Research indicates that the toxin damages kidneys at concentrations that are 100 times lower than what causes neurological effects.-sciencedaily

Natural gas to oil news

If new catalysts work as well in a large, commercial scale plant as they do in tests, Siluria says, the company could produce gasoline from natural gas at about half the cost of making it from crude oil—at least at today’s cheap natural-gas prices. If Siluria really can make cheap gasoline from natural gas it will have achieved something that has eluded the world’s top chemists and oil and gas companies for decades. Indeed, finding an inexpensive and direct way to upgrade natural gas into more valuable and useful chemicals and fuels could finally mean a cheap replacement for petroleum.
Natural gas burns much more cleanly than oil—power plants that burn oil emit 50 percent more carbon dioxide than natural gas ones. It also is between two and six times more abundant than oil, and its price has fallen dramatically now that technologies like fracking and horizontal drilling have led to a surge of production from unconventional sources like the Marcellus Shale. While oil costs around $100 a barrel, natural gas sells in the U.S. for the equivalent of $20 a barrel.-nextbigfuture

Alternatives to traditional sources of oil are on the horizon.  Biological means of synthesizing oil are being tested. And here we see that it may be possible to cost effectively use abundant natural gas as a means of oil generation.
