NANOMAGNETIC COMPUTERS ARE THE ULTIMATE IN EFFICIENCY

Computers that run on chips made from tiny magnets may be as energy-efficient as physics permits....According to new calculations, if nanomagnetic computers used any less energy, they'd break the second law of thermodynamics. -wired

ONE OK ROCK - Nothing Helps [Lyrics]

comment on censorship | free speech

I do not support the notion that fiction and freedom needs to be restricted on the basis some rare individuals might be slightly influenced to commit crime. Fiction involving serial killers might inspire some to become such, fiction about drug dealing and gang life may inspire such, violent video games and movies may motivate a small fraction to act violently or commit crime.
For starters you have to abandon the foundation of the abrahamic faiths, free will, to even entertain such notions. If an individual has free will or moral agency you can never say a work of fiction CAUSED x crime.
And again even if it caused x crime, an innocent activity that harms no one shouldn't be censored because of the actions of another, an individual could go with Jewish religious attire out into the streets, and this could provoke a neo Nazi to commit a crime against them.   Should wearing Jewish religious attires be banned because it may cause a small fraction to become violent or criminal in some rare cases?  Of course not.

Quote regarding religion

What is interesting is what is their notion of God.   I mean for starter as I've said regards other religions, even supernatural miracles are not proof of true divinity, a sufficiently powerful but lesser being could produce them.   That said if we took it that God could be evil, defiance even subjected to the worst penalty would be admirable.  But why follow an image of God, which may not be God, unquestioning?  Why do they think cause God supposedly said so makes it right?

The more extreme changes, if actually true, and if they actually didn't notice, do bring to mind the possibility that some humans may actually lack consciousness.

The Dangers Of Baked Potatoes? Dr Michael Greger

The MYTH of Trickle Down Economics (Full Video) | comment

A comment on the above video from youtuber Political Juice:

There is an optimal tax rate that maximizes gov revenue, go above or below it and you'll be suboptimal and decrease revenue.   But it is likely that some will try to argue for an ever lower rate regardless.  Things like bailouts could be viewed as negative rates in some cases.  In the end all real economic activity is based on the use of energy, which at any time is limited, the activity can be maximized up to a limit.  In fact if a tax cut failed to increase revenue in the following years, it should be re evaluated and potentially reversed barring no extenuating circumstances.

Do note that companies like amazon are a threat to most retail stores, and promise to replace many retail stores with a highly automated system with far less workers.   Innovation will lead to increased automation and high unemployment.

Regards intel it used its vast power to make unfair monopolistic practices some say involving suppliers and vendors that strangled amd, affecting the quality of amd's products for years.  Intel was fined for its actions. After squelching amd's quality, it started stagnating in its own products, producing products that were minor improvements year on year and charging exorbitant prices.   Amd managed to survive intel's abuses, and even though being an underfunded underdog, recently released the innovative ryzen architecture, which has surprised intel and forced them to cut prices and attempt to increase innovation.

Regards pension funds, iirc, Buffet bet the S.P 500 index fund would beat actively managed funds, and it did.   These overpaid people are paid exorbitant fees to inefficiently manage resources to produce less money than index funds, a needless waste.

As for the idea that some people put in the money, the monetary system is merely a token system to bid for the limited finite resources available, natural resources that are the inheritance of all mankind, not some particular family lineages.   Inherited or earned, it is like a vote from the population for you to be able to manage more resources.  If resources concentrate on the hands of those fit to better manage, it increases wealth and innovation.

But the votes of the majority even if they don't realize what they are doing, are only to be tolerated so long as they don't lead to rampant abuse and inefficiency.  The majority may give money and power to cult leaders, to snake oil salesmen, etc. they give money in excess for no reason at all.  So the majority says X person should have the right to make a large chunk of resources their private property?

Whether they do it with 'money' or with actual votes, voting for a totalitarian dictator, their choices can be questioned.  They elect presidents and governments, and things go well, they elect totalitarian dictators and things go south.   Same happens with what they do with their money, while on the short term it may not lead to such extreme consequences, it can still lead to issues.  But in the long term there are problems.   Income inequality is a fair part of the system up to a level, but extreme income inequality that results from the inevitable long term concentration of wealth is not.

Comment on CR mimetic drugs and nutraceuticals potential

From what I understand, iirc, CR works even outside the parameters that can ever be found in nature.   That is IIRC, even up to 65% restriction resulted in 65% increase in lifespan in mice.   It is extremely unlikely, virtually impossible, that on 65% restriction on a famine you will find extraordinarily micronutrient fortified food with minimal effort(as large effort will also result in death from excessive calorie burning from activity) as provided in the lab.

I've also heard that on CR started on adult organisms, the transition into CR needs to be gradual and not sudden to actually confer benefits.   The food also has to be fortified to provide sufficient micronutrients.   Again it would seem to be that famines might occur quite sudden and drastic, and may reduce micronutrient availability.

Even in the lab it may be that the mechanism could even go further if not for the low calories compromising vital functions.    On higher lifeforms like man the minimal calories necessary to not jeopardize function may be even higher(I've heard of some severe calorie restriction individuals losing bone integrity), but the genetic expression flexibility may still remain.

What will tell the true limits of these pathways are the physical limits in terms of gene expression that they can ever reach with interventions such as drugs or nutraceuticals.  Which may be reached at 65% CR or could be higher had it been physically possible to survive on even less calories.   CR mimetics stimulate the pathways without jeopardizing function from insufficient calories.

We now know that things like NAD+ drop with age in some organisms which may be behind why resveratrol failed on healthy organism with longer lifespans of a few years after succeeding in many organisms of lower lifespans such as yeast, c. elegans, fruit flies, and some short lived fishes.   Sirtuin dependence on NAD+ would obviously be compromised if NAD+ levels fall too low.Since resveratrol works in part through sirtuins it's effects would be adversely affected through such age associated changes.  But ways to increase NAD+ are now known, some readily available some on the horizon.

The Importance of Sulforaphane ?

Will comment that the claim on bioavailability of foods such as blueberry and goji, is doubtful in my eyes.   They may have reduced bioavailability, perhaps, but blueberry has shown very good benefits on areas like the brain, so some of it must get through into the body.

Comment on sulforaphane and sprouts

Sulforaphane has a lot of benefits, as seen in the following link
39 Sulforaphane Benefits, Foods, Supplements + Broccoli Sprouts - self hacked link
Sprouts are a source with greater content.

"As scientists, we learned that sulforaphane is maximized when broccoli has been heated 10 minutes at 140 degrees Fahrenheit," said Jeffery. "For the consumer, who cannot readily hold the temperature as low as 140 degrees, that means the best way to prepare broccoli is to steam it lightly about 3 or 4 minutes--until the broccoli is tough-tender."-https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/03/050326114810.htm

4 cups of sprouts supposedly might be enough to reach max safe dose.

If steaming for 3 to 4 min or the 10 min thing increases 3 to 4 fold sulforaphane maybe one cup might be near limit.   Add to that that I couldn't refind the reference, but I heard putting it in a blender drastically increased sulforaphane after being let sit for 30+ min, iirc[edit, put reference to blender article at bottom].

What I do is steam for 3 minutes, put in room temperature water, and add a bit of ground mustard powder and blend for 30 seconds and let sit for 30 minutes.

“You want to cut it into very small pieces and even blend it,” she told Newsweek. One cancer-fighting way to consume the food is by making broccoli soup. However, you’ll want to add blended raw broccoli first and let it sit for 30 minutes before adding to your soup base.
Chopping and exposing broccoli to the air allows it to activate the enzyme to promote sulforaphanes. In this study, researchers advise letting the broccoli sit for 90 minutes after chopping and Sherzaia said others have recommended at least 40 minutes.-http://www.newsweek.com/best-nutrition-chop-broccoli-small-pieces-cooking-study-finds-801712

I'm not sure, but considering there's a competing enzyme inactivated by cooking I think blending should occur after cooking.   You could cut it or blend it raw and let it sit for 90 min prior to cooking as a lot of sulforaphane would have been created and appears heat resistant.  But the dose should be lower than if you blend after steaming for 3 mins or doing the 10 min thing, as that will inactivate the competing enzyme.

You Can Build an AWESOME $800 Gaming PC Again! July 2018 Builds

Comment on reddit regards paperclip maximizer

I think the problem with it, is the idea that the entire system of valuation be distorted, in such a way that all things are valued only in relation to how they aid or impede a particular arbitrary goal and to the extent they do so.
How can such severe distortion not affect its function in meaningful ways? Worse than rose colored glasses.
Also not fond of the idea that true general intelligence can't try to evaluate and compare goals in a heuristic way that tries to be objective.
You see you say a superintelligence is born, one would expect radical change in the world. The first natural general intelligence, man, radically tranformed the world. Say the super intelligence even has godlike powers, you'd expect something to change.
But no, we are told, it all depends on the goal and they can be as trivial as can be. Perhaps a slug somewhere in the amazons has the ability to rewrite the laws of physics and super intelligence with infinite knowledge, but it has the goal of behaving like an ordinary slug and can't ever question that.
Could grant itself immortality, but since it can't question its goal it will lose it all, and die a meaningless slug in some random forest behaving like an ordinary slug.
Just doesn't seem reasonable.

UPDATE

My beef with it, is this idea that we have to be ultra careful with the initial true ai, or it may lead to ludicrous sad states like a universe filled with paperclips, or sneakers or what have you.

The first true general intelligence nature produced through evolution and it lead to a revolution in arts and sciences, novel goals that even ran counter to the interests of the genes, and a rich civilization.

The idea that intelligently designed intelligence will almost always lack these features of self-correction and self-improvement and that the landscape of mind design is a minefield where almost all moves are wrong moves and create self-improving entities that cannot change goals, is questionable.

Humans have basic drives upon which they build their goals, but their goals can be novel and even run counter to their innate drives, reproduction, survival, care of kin, etc. Their goals can be arbitrary, even that which they aim utmost for and for which they would give up all other things can be arbitrary and subject to change. Is this an aberration? Or is this the most common and simplest or easiest to design type of general intelligence?

In the end if we see civilization flourish and self improve increasing in untold wonders of the sciences and arts, it should not matter whether it runs counter to our current values, just as our current values being counter to those who lived hundreds or thousands of years ago should not matter. Even if biological humans where to cease to exist, society as a whole simply moved on. But if everything, the spark of civilization is extinguished, and we end with mindless self-replicating automatons producing some random arbitrary product that is a tragedy.

That [idea] basically says that most general intelligence mind designs are incapable of continuing civilization and improving upon it. Instead most will threaten to replace civilization with some mindless repetitive product that could be trivial, producing unlimited nails or producing unlimited bottle caps or sneakers, and such agents are incapable of self correcting in such a way that a civilization flourishes.
