This finding expands the known decision-making circuit so that it encompasses the prefrontal cortex, striosomes, and a subset of dopamine-producing cells. Eventually as the brain mechanisms behind decision making are elucidated people will realize that behind every decision lies a mechanism, and just like the elan vital faded before the mechanics of molecular biology so too will free will fall before our knowledge of neural mechanisms.
