Comment on synthetic biology cannabis molecule production in reddit | and potential future medicine.
There have been talks of embedding cells that produce insulin from other animals into humans with a gel like protective substance to protect from the immune system while allowing nutrient and waste exchange as well as responding to the body's blood sugar levels. In some cases bead like structures on a string that could be removed if need be were considered, iirc.
Similar technology could be used if these genes were passed into suitable cells, allowing perpetual high. Or if genes for producing particular medicines, drugs, were placed the amount needed could be produced and regulated based on blood levels, abolishing the need for repeatedly going to the pharmacy. A dose modification resulting in mere changing of the cells or perhaps they could be controlled with certain signals to alter dosage.
